History and Types of Japanese Swords

Japanese swords boast a lengthy tradition that goes back over 1,000 years, with different kinds of swords appearing throughout the ages. The evolution of the sword was influenced by Japan's social, cultural and political environment.

Evolution of Sword Types

The first known Japanese swords date in the Heian, the period (794-1185 CE) which saw the creation of the tachi which was a curving sword with the blade facing downwards. In the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE), the Katana was introduced as a flexible and curly sword, and became the image of the Samurai class. The wakizashi (a shorter counterpart sword) was created during this time. It was during the Edo time period (1603-1868 CE) the tanto, a tiny dagger, gained popularity among the samurai.

Distinctive Features of Various Swords

Every type of Japanese sword is unique in its characteristics, reflecting the time and the reason it was designed. For example, the katana is distinguished by its curving shape with a single edge and a lengthy handle, which makes it ideal to be used with two hands. The wakizashi, on the contrary, is smaller and lighter, crafted to be used in close combat. The tanto, with its narrow knife and straight edges was used to defend oneself and for ceremonies.

Notable Swordsmiths

Through Japanese time there have been numerous famed swordsmiths who have made masterpieces that are still revered and sought after today.
